Promoting care at home

Promoting independence to your elderly or disabled loved ones can help their quality of life. Here’s our guide to making life easier.

1. Fit safety adaptations. This could include bathroom handle bars, furniture placements, hand rails and stair lifts.

2. Invest in gadgetry. There’s a huge range of products availble including simple jar openers, to handy grabbers to wheelchair accessible kitchen appliances.

3. Encourage helping in the home. We all like to feel valued – focus on what people can do – if they don’t like washing up, ask them to dry the dishes instead whilst they’re sitting down? Let your loved one guide you on what they like doing.

4. Consider joining community groups. Having a place to go regularly, if possible, promotes social interaction and self esteem.
